The Story Behind She is Modern

Hi, I’m Sophie Harlow.

I didn’t grow up around beautiful homes. My family didn’t have much, and the houses I lived in were small, worn, and far from the picture perfect spaces I’d see in magazines. But I remember standing in doorways of other people’s homes as a kid, taking in every detail, the way light fell across a room, how a single throw pillow could make a couch feel intentional, how a coat of paint could completely transform a space. I promised myself that one day, I’d learn how to create that feeling, not just for myself but for anyone who needed it.

That promise turned into a real obsession. I started small: rearranging furniture in my childhood bedroom, saving up for thrifted pieces, teaching myself how to reupholster a chair from YouTube tutorials at 2 AM. My first real project was a balcony no bigger than a closet, I turned it into a small garden with vertical planters and railing pots and that one project taught me more about working with limited space than any design book ever could.

Over the next 6 years, I kept building on that experience, one space at a time. I spent time working in a few beautifully designed, high end homes, and getting to see how thoughtful, expensive design actually comes together up close taught me more than any course could. It showed me that luxury isn’t really about the price tag, it’s about intention, and that same principle can be applied on any budget. I built a backyard patio from scratch with reclaimed bricks and a stone fire pit. I experimented with industrial elements in a rental where I couldn’t touch a single wall, learning how to create a bold look using only paint, lighting, and smart styling.

One project that really stuck with me was helping my friend Maya redo her tiny apartment living room on a budget of under $300. She had a cramped, awkward layout and mismatched furniture she’d collected over the years from three different apartments. We didn’t buy a single new piece of furniture. Instead, I rearranged what she already had, added a $12 can of paint to one accent wall, made simple no sew curtains from fabric remnants, and used mirrors to make the room feel twice its actual size. By the end, it looked like a completely different apartment, and it taught me something I still believe today, good design isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about how well you use what you have.

That project led to more, a coworker’s cluttered bedroom, a cousin’s first house, a neighbor’s neglected backyard corner. Each one came with its own budget, its own limitations, and its own lessons. And somewhere along the way, I realized how much I loved seeing that shift in someone’s home and in how they felt about it. That’s what pushed me to start sharing everything I’d learned, not just with the people around me, but with anyone who needed it.

Today, She is Modern is where I share everything I’ve learned practical, tested home decor ideas that don’t require a big budget or a professional designer. Every guide on this site, from small balcony gardens to cozy room makeovers, comes from something I’ve actually tried, tested, or styled myself, not just something that looked good on Pinterest.

If you’re starting from a small, imperfect space and dreaming of something beautiful — I’ve been exactly where you are. Let’s build that space together.
